My Fashion Evolution

Let's Throw it Back!

Hey Y’all!

How many of you consider yourself to be stylish at this present stage in your life but when it comes to your past fashion sense, you cringe?

Yup, that’s how I feel. But I have decided to put myself out there and let you see photos that I would otherwise burn if it weren’t so funny and humbling all at the same time.

Fashion is ever changing and what we find to be fashionable right now may not be so fashionable in the future. Let’s take a look back at some of my past looks and see if I was a total fashion disaster. In full disclosure, I still own and wear some of these clothing items. Can you guess which ones?

Alright, you ready? Let’s go!

Do you see that cheetah print? And those faux fur high heel boots? You couldn't tell me I wasn't fly!
Why did I wear a grey tank top with this outfit? Better yet, why wasn't it tucked in to the skirt?
That was my first large bag. That babyphat handbag catapulted me into womanhood. I couldn't find anything in there!
I was on to something with this dress. Who needs to accesorize an outfit when it's already made with the jewelry?
This dress did nothing for my small frame but on the right person it would've been a banger, right? No? Well what about my sandals? Looks like I borrowed it from bible times and jazzed it up by making it metallic.
This outfit was a bit much for me at 18 years old, however it was my favourite outfit
Speaking of outfits being too much for me at a certain age, I was 17 yrs old and I was dressing like a banker. Why? Because my aunt believed you were never too young to look professional.
Honestly, no caption needed. If I still had that jacket, it would be in heavy rotation right now. LOVE
Who says you cant dress to match your surroundings? This dress was alot, especially because I was at church. But I figured it wouldn't be that bad to have the girls join us for service considering we wouldnt be in the actual church building, but at a camp site instead. Looking back, while still a cute dress...I should have said no.
From this angle the outfit didn't look too bad...
... but from this angle...*queue Destiny's Child song "No, no, no, no, no." Let me also add that the blouse was see through.
Those shoes! Had it not been kitten heels I would still have it.
Is it just me or does this dress look like it was made from burlap?
Okay this look isn't so bad, is it?
Apple Bottoms top, paired with stockings underneath my jeans and open toed wedges. Who let me out the house like that?
Now before you say anything, I had just gotten home after leaving the hair salon. There was no need to dress up. And that track suit was so cute and warm!
Let me turn around and throw it back for ya! You better recognize them apple bottom jeans! Ha! Truth is, it wasn't even flattering on me but I wore them all the time anyway.
This outfit, I think, was really simple and cute. I mean, the rhinestones on the side of the jeans could cut you but besides that, it was tres cute
What's there to say about this one except for that was alot of clothes to wear on a hot Jamaican day. However, this outfit is fire
I don't know, I kind of like this ensemble. And what you cant see is the back of the heel is lined gold. Maybe I didn't do so bad here.
This was my 22nd birthday. Where was I going with those shoes and that maxi dress?
Admit it, this outfit looks like it belongs to a 12 year old child and I borrowed it.
White socks and sneakers? I should've known better.
On the other hand, who says you cant pair a bustier with a jeans skirt and call it chic?
I may have been a teen but I think this was a classic look then and now. See, I wasn't totally clueless!
This dress was hot! You couldn't say a word to me when I put this thing on! It didnt't matter if you didn't say it to me, I just knew I was sexy!

Fashion is a language that everyone speaks and the way we dress says a lot about us. Fashion helps us express ourselves without us having to utter a single word. It can tell us who is daring, who is shy, who is creative, who loves everything color and those who merely prefers neutrals and shades.

No matter which era we were born in, our personal styles will always be influenced in some way by either pop culture, our genealogical backgrounds, politics, faith and to include our most recent years; social media, etc. When you look back at generations from long ago, whether it be your grandparents generation or even just your parents, you will see that the way we dress right now is vastly different from then, and that some styles from back then may have gone but since made a comeback.

Now that we have looked through my style diary together, I hope you don’t judge my fashion sense too harshly. Do you think you know what my personal style is like currently? Have I really evolved or do I still make some questionable style choices?

As usual, thanks for taking the time to check in with me.

Xoxo,

CandyQane 💕

Visiting a Hindu Temple? 6 Things You Should Be Aware of Beforehand

Hey Y’all! Now I know what you’re thinking, “why would you be going to a Hindu temple if you’re not Hindu?” And you’re right, I’m not going there for worship, but I have always been intrigued by religions outside of Christianity, and it certainly doesn’t hurt that architecturally, the temple is a sight to behold. So what was it like? Well I’m glad you asked… While vacationing in England, I was looking into what activity to do for the day when I set my sights on a picture of the Hindu temple and it piqued my interest. So one mid afternoon, my friends and I decided to go see it in person. We had no clue where we were going. We actually got lost on the way there because public transportation, at least from the direction in which we started our journey, didn’t stop exactly outside of the temple. So after approximately 20 minutes of bobbing and weaving through traffic and alleyways (no exaggeration- lets just say Google Maps can’t always be trusted), we could see the promised land ahead. View of the mandir from the street Hindu temples are referred to as Mandir. Baps Shri Swaminarayan Mandir is nestled in a small town in Neasden, London. As a matter of fact, Neasden is a suburban area outside of the city, which hides itself from tourists. Take Note 1. Admission into the temple is free of charge. 2. If you are 16 years of age or under, you must make sure that you are accompanied by an adult or else you will be denied entry. 3. It is important to note that food, drinks, bags larger than a wallet, phones and cameras are prohibited inside and will be confiscated before entering the building. 4. You’d also be surprised to know that if you are chewing gum, you will be demanded to spit it out as chewing gum in the temple is a sign of disrespect. 5. Additionally, as one might suspect, they have a very strict dress code. If what you’re wearing doesn’t fit into their guidelines, you will be given a wrap to cover the necessary area(s). We found this out the hard way which resulted in one of my friends being given the wrap due to her skirt not being long enough to fully cover her knees. 6. Because it is a sacred space, shoes aren’t to be worn within the building. After our belongings were safely stowed away, we were handed a ticket (sort of like the ones provided at coat check), and cleared to enter the temple. Entrance doors of the temple As soon as we stepped foot into the entrance, we noticed a room on the left side containing numerous cubbyholes for visitors to leave our shoes. At first, I wasn’t so keen on taking off my shoes to walk barefoot, but the temple was impeccably clean- which eased my mind. Inside, we found numerous rooms dedicated to worship, each more beautiful than the next. One significant feature to note is that each room was filled with so much character through their use of color. It was then explained that Hindu temples are extremely colorful not because of design preference but because of many different reasons- one of which, is that it helps to keep a person cheerful. Once we were satisfied with our self guided tour throughout the temple, we reclaimed our shoes, collected our belongings by the front gate where we initially entered the premises and proceeded to wander the grounds. During our visit, we were made aware that there were 1200 exact replicas of the mandir across the globe. We were also told that if we thought this temple was a beauty, we should definitely try to go to Robbinsville, New Jersey as there we would find the largest and most grandeur Hindu temple the world has to offer. Strolling through the grounds was therapeutic because not only did it turn out to be a beautiful day (it had rained earlier), but the atmosphere was incredibly peaceful, which in part, lends itself to the spectacular views, and the sounds of the water surrounding the temple along with the chitter chatter of birds in the distance.  It was as if my friends and I were relaxing in our very spacious and well manicured backyard as there wasn’t a crowd of people to distract us from the beauty that was within those gates and it left us alone with each other and our thoughts. Whether or not visiting a Hindu temple is on your list of places to go, I say do it. You don’t have to convert religions, but you may very well end up enjoying your experience. As usual, thanks for taking the time to check in with me. Xoxo, CandyQane 💕

What’s Your Favourite Type of Vacation?

Hey Y’all! Raise your hand if you love taking vacations… Now raise your hand if you want to be on a vacation at this very moment. Okay, okay, I may not be able to actually see if you’re raising your hand or not, but I do know one thing, I love taking vacations and if you don’t; well I simply cannot relate to you. But what do you consider your perfect vacation? Is it flying to a Caribbean island, checking into an all inclusive resort, laying down on a towel in the sand or on a beach chair while drinking a cool beverage with an umbrella stuck inside? (Let’s pause a minute so I can catch my breath after that extremely long winded question… 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, okay let’s continue…) Or do you prefer to specifically fly somewhere that can satisfy your sense of adventure where you can go exploring? Enjoying a “chill day” at my resort in Thailand Well I’m the type of girl who loves both- at the same time. I can’t have one trip where I do nothing more than relax, only to fly home and then plan another trip just to sight-see. I mean, that could change in the future, but right now I view that as a wasted opportunity. Whenever I go somewhere new, my priority is seeing the differences in culture, architecture and food before I even think to relax. If I’m being completely honest with myself– and by extension with you– I can stay in a resort which doesn’t require me to leave at any time, but the hotel staff would be lucky to even see my face more than one or two days of my trip. This sometimes leaves me returning from vacation more tired than when I left. What can I say, the world is an intriguing place. Can you spot me in this picture roaming the steets of Malta? Aside from the obviously most desired type of vacation, which is going to the Caribbean, there are also other types of vacations that one may want to embark on that is very different than going to a tropical island. These include but are not limited to: 1. Road Trips 2. Stay-cations 3. Camping Trips 4. City Trips 5. Ski Trips 6. Cruises Road Trips Road tripping in Canada with the girls Give me a good playlist and the right people and I will be up for a good road trip any day of the week! My longest road trip to date was driving from Toronto to New York to Maryland to Georgia (only quickly stopping to pick people up) and that was over a 24 hour drive. What I love about road trips are the fact that you have time to think while being on the open road, you have time to bond with those you are traveling with and you get to see a new side of family/friends- because best believe being cramped in a car for hours will show some people up! My #1 thing about road trips is the spontaneity. If you’re driving along and see something fun to do or you see a piece of nature that one can only describe as breathtaking, as long as you’re not on a time crunch, you can stop and check it out- no hassle. It’s also something you’ll always remember because it wasn’t planned. Damn, now I wanna go on a road trip. Stay-cations Enjoying an evening by the lake Let’s get real, stay-cations are sometimes necessary. Being the ‘homebody’ that I am, this is my second favourite type of vacation. You don’t have to wake up super early to go anywhere (can you tell I’m a night owl and not a fun loving early riser?), you can easily have an enjoyable girls night in your city without fear that not everyone can make it, and the best part is that you can discover spots close to home that you never even realized existed or never took the time out of your busy day to day schedule to experience. It’s also much cheaper than jet-setting off to an exotic country millions of miles away. Often times we see the gems in far away lands and bypass what is right under our noses. Camping Trips Enjoying the serenity at a cabin in Quebec, Canada As an ex Master Guide pathfinder (this is sort of like cadets but in the Seventh Day Adventist denomination of Christianity it’s called Pathfinders), I can fully admit that camping and I aren’t always compatible with each other. I mean, let’s not get it twisted, I find nature to be so peaceful and relaxing but I am more so the glamping type of female. Glamping, for those of you who are unfamiliar with the term, is defined to be “the activity of camping with some of the comforts and luxuries of home.” Now I won’t deny that I have always been the bougie female you have grown to know so how did I manage camping before? Well that’s a question that only Jesus himself can answer because I am still mystified. But if you invite me camping today and I know I don’t have to assemble a tent or catch my dinner or use a filthy bathroom, then I’ll have no problems going. If not, I’ll be happy to go glamping with you and I promise we will all enjoy it. But hey, some people love a good ‘ole fashioned camping experience and if this is your cup of tea, well start planning your next camping trip because summer is coming! City Trips Wandering through the streets of London, England  I am a city girl through and through so these kinds of trips always make me excited. I remember when I was living in New York and my family was thinking of moving to a lovely gated community in Pennsylvania. Sure the home they were looking at purchasing was massive and we’d have a lot of yard space, but I begged them to re-consider (which they did) because I would no longer hear the noises associated with the city, ie, police sirens, firetrucks, loud music booming from cars in the summer time, loud motorcycles, etc. Not the fact that I’d miss my friends but rather the perks of what was easily accessible to me by living in the city… priorities, right? Haha. So even now when planning trips, the city is a must for me to see. Most people love the tranquility of staying in a quiet place, and I wont knock it because there is a time and place for every kind of trip, but I love the hustle and bustle of city life. And if I can afford a nice hotel in the heart of the city, well I don’t know if I’d ever want to leave and go back home. Ski Trips Random selfie in the snow here in Toronto Skiing has never been my idea of fun but that’s not to say that I completely oppose the idea of ever doing it. Millions of people enjoy this past time simply because it provides good, clean, family fun. It’s daring and provides a thrill that seems to be addictive. Here’s the thing, I like snow but it’s too cold for me to even entertain the idea of doing any activities which involve it.  I consider being somewhere warm, with my toes hidden snugly under a blanket, while watching the snow fall outside as my perfect winter activity. I have several friends who have asked me to do various winter activities such as skating, snowboarding and skiing– I mean, I do live in Canada so this is to be expected– but until I’ve changed my perception of fun to exercising as a frozen popsicle, I’m forced to take a rain-check. You are, however, welcome to check back with me in 10 years to see if I’ve taken the plunge yet. Cruises Imagine being in one of those cruise ships behind me taking in this Grecian view! The fact that I have yet to go on a cruise baffles me. Think about it, lots of food and activities all in one spot, while visiting multiple countries in “one trip” and I don’t have to worry about planning excursions? That’s a lazy girls ideal trip. Do I sometimes have invasive thoughts that while on a cruise we will have the misfortune of slamming into an iceberg, bringing me to my untimely death? Sure! Or that someone might accidentally push me overboard? uh yea! I cant swim! Or that a disease will break out and leave me stranded far from dry land; which could also lead to my untimely death? Maybe what also gets me is the possibility that I could be enjoying one of the countries I’ve stopped on so much, that the time slips away from me, causing my ship to leave me, and knowing that my mother would in due time get her hands on me for being stupid enough not to be a responsible adult and that would also lead to my life being cut short. Hold up, this has taken an ugly turn. *smooths out my hair and slaps myself in the face, while straightening my shirt* My apologies. Cruises seem like so much fun. There are also people who only go on cruises so really, how bad could they be? Maybe one day… “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” Marcel Proust Tweet Ever since I was a child, travel was my favourite past time. I was a 1 year old the first time my mom took me on a plane and I have been a frequent traveler since. I am a firm believer that we shouldn’t only experience life from a book or through a television screen. Travel helps us to leave some of our ignorance behind by allowing us to see and understand things we wouldn’t have if we hadn’t lived it. If you can’t afford to fly off somewhere, there are different types of trips you can take that do not require a passport. Get into it. Not all of us enjoy or can afford the same things but there is so much life to be lived, lessons to learn and fun to be had. Hopefully my list helps you to see that. As usual, thanks for taking the time to check in with me. Xoxo, CandyQane 💕

How to Survive Quarantine

Hey Y’all!  This year has been rough on us, hasn’t it? I mean, it’s only March, yet we’ve lived through being on the verge of World War III, locusts have swarmed East Africa, a wild bush fire in Australia was so severe it caused millions of animals to perish, there was an extremely rare earthquake in the Caribbean, Kobe and his daughter Gianna, along with 7 other people died in a plane crash, and now the dreaded virus COVID-19 has threatened our very existence and life as we know it. Whew! I need to catch my breath because that was a lot! Does anyone else feel like 2020 set us up for failure before we even had a chance to prove ourselves? I mean, let’s talk about it. We are currently living in a worldwide pandemic and it doesn’t matter what country we live in, our age, race, what social class we belong to or what religious beliefs we may have, we are all in the same position. We are on lock down. So as concerts, sporting events, graduations, award shows, churches and more get cancelled, planes become grounded and airports await travel bans to be lifted, borders between countries are closed via air and sea, schools, libraries, museums, cinemas, theaters, restaurants, court houses and basically every single job closes their doors, what is left for us to do? Below I have listed my top 10 things that can help us pass the time. 1. Read a Book Now I don’t know about you, but this is the perfect time to turn off the news and distract yourself- if even for an hour or two each day, and immerse yourself in a good book. I remember a time when reading was my life. I was basically Belle from The Beauty and the Beast. I would envision myself as a character in whatever book I was reading and it would help me escape my actual life. Sometimes, depending on which book I am reading, I still find myself in situations such as this. Do you have any books that you’ve put to the side but haven’t read yet? Well now is as good a time as any to pick it back up. 2. Take a Nap Raise your hand if sleep feels like a luxury. Every time you lay your head to rest, you are prevented from sleeping because your mind is racing from one thing to the next and you find it difficult to close all the tabs in your brain. Or maybe you can only get so much sleep because you are a parent or you simply are just juggling too many things in your life. Well insert sleep here because this is the time to catch up on some z’s. This will cause you to reset and feel more refreshed for the day we all get sprung free from our isolation camps aka our homes. 3. Have a Watch Party! Have you heard that Netflix has launched a program called “Netflix Party?” Well, it can have you watching the same show at your varied places of abode at the same time while communicating via chat. It also “synchronizes video playback” too. If for some reason this isn’t a viable option for you, or you want to watch something from a different platform, try the next best thing which is to load your program on your tv or computer, wait for the person(s) you plan to watch it with to do the same, get on Skype or FaceTime, hit play at the same time and have fun with your friends while effectively practicing social distancing! 4. Solo Dance Party via GIPHY Who says you need people to have a good party? Make a playlist, crank the music up, and let loose all by yourself. Dance it out. Dance out all the worry, fear, thoughts of doom and gloom, and just have fun. And you wanna know the best part about this? Even if you can’t dance, no one is watching, you are in a judgment free zone. Go wild! 5. Do a Puzzle or Color! Puzzles are a great way to bond with those in your household and kill the time while actually having fun. If you are stuck at home riding out this quarantine with siblings, nieces/nephews, children, parents or your significant other- whomever it may be, this is a good way to keep your brain in check. And yes, if you do not have a puzzle at home, there’s an app for that. If isolation has begun to cause you to experience some stress or anxiety, coloring books are a proven way to help with that. It helps you to relax, and de-stress. Who knew this wasn’t only meant for kids? I sure didn’t. Not until a couple years ago. So if you think this may be beneficial for you, you can either purchase these books in a store or online via places like amazon or even try the modern way as mentioned above- an app.  To find the apps shown above, simply search your app store (Android/iPhone) for “Jigsaw Puzzles- Puzzle Game” and “Pigment Adult Colouring Book.” 6. Spring Cleaning Despite the fact that this year is proving to be difficult to plan for, we can continue to do things that will bring some normalcy back to our lives. For those of us living in colder countries, we can begin our spring cleaning. We can get our gardens ready, swap out our thicker curtains and bed spreads for lighter ones, pack away our winter clothing and pull out our spring/summer wear into the forefront of our closet, etc. Now I know spring has just arrived less than a week ago, and for us Canadians this doesn’t mean that we will be getting spring weather anytime soon– someone call for snow?– but since we are under self isolation, we should have copious amounts of time to get a head start on these things. Also, if you were thinking of re-decorating a room in your house, why not do it now while you have the time? 7. Get Fresh Air https://www.candyqanedreams.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/IMG_8221.m4v Let’s not get it twisted. Just because we are forced into isolation does not mean that we cannot go outside the confines of our walls. Go for a walk down your block, sit on your balcony if you have one or sit in your back yard and get some vitamin D and fresh air into your lungs. It is important to keep ourselves as healthy as humanly possible right now. 8. Listen to a Podcast Now, I know the photo above seems to have absolutely nothing to with podcasts but I promise, I will tie it all together. I’m just a bit hungry at the moment so this photo seems perfect haha. But seriously, podcasts are amazing. It’s like listening to the radio, but without ads and with multiple different personalities and topics based on the person(s) you have chosen to listen to and what you like. This could range anywhere from business, exercise, book clubs, religion, pop culture and the list goes on and on. So how about multitasking and listening to it while cooking (see I told you I would tie it in), doing laundry or other household chores. In addition to that, why not take the time to stock up your refrigerator with multiple home cooked meals. Instead of chips, your choice of snack could be fried dumplings or a beef sandwich. The best part about this is that the time you spent cooking will fly by because of the podcast you’re listening to and it will feel like you have people in your home with you. 9. Prioritize Self Care Feeling overwhelmed? Uncertainty about the future making you nervous? Not to worry. We live in a generation where there is an app for everything. Sometimes, these apps help us to become more centered and become more in tune with ourselves. The calm app is amazing for this. However, you will find that because it is basically the best app out there when it comes to relaxation, it is pricey. Well, they have currently released a free resource page so any and everyone can benefit from their content which was curated to support our “mental and emotional wellness through this time.” They have recordings for categories such as “soothing meditations, sleep meditations, sleep stories, calming music, calm body, calm masterclass, calm kids, mindfulness resources, practices to find ease.” Go check it out, the website is linked above. 10. Group Chat via GIPHY My family, friends and I have been utilizing this step a lot during our quarantine. It’s been helping to bridge the gap and to minimize feelings of loneliness, which is incredible since none of us needed to catch flights in order to see and talk to each other at the same time. There are many platforms that can be used to accomplish this task; FaceTime, Skype, Instagram group video, Whatsapp video, etc. If you are not an introvert like I am, this entire situation may be exceptionally tough for you. Just hang in there, think about the many reasons we are all quarantined. Pray for those individuals and their families who have been personally and tragically affected by this. If you have a job that allows you to work from home, or if you have a job that had to close during this period but you are fortunate enough to still get paid each day; that is a blessing. This world is causing us to slow down right now. God is telling us to take a break and appreciate the smaller things in life because we could easily be here today and gone tomorrow. Staying home is not a prison sentence. Get to know yourself,  learn to enjoy your own company and use the resources you have available at your fingertips to keep yourself sane. Be sure to drink your fluids, always wash your hands with soap as many times as needed, sanitize your phones, doorknobs, groceries, tables, etc and practice social distancing. If not for yourself, be responsible for others. As usual, thanks for taking the time to check in with me. Xoxo, CandyQane 💕
